Surrounded by scenic Welsh countryside lies a derelict, sprawling Victorian estate; North Wales Hospital, known locally as Denbigh Asylum
The hospital was built in 1848 and is Grade II listed. It once housed around 1500 psychiatric patients and staff and had its own farm and gasworks.
It was planned for closure in the 1960’s and finally closed its doors in 1995.
Sadly the owners have neglected the building after planning permission for the site lapsed, in part due to a fire which destroyed much of the main building. Ceilings and roofs are collapsing in various parts and there is very little left of the original building contents.
The local council appear to have submitted a compulsory purchase order and planning permission. Hopefully this site will be regenerated in the not too distant future.
